Hexham Local History Society was founded in 1966 and is now the largest local history society in Northumberland.
Our members meet on the second Tuesday of the months between January and May and between September and November. There are no meetings in June, July and August although in each of these months a visit to a place of historic interest throughout the northeast is arranged.
New members are always welcome to meetings. Just come along to one of our meetings, at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday in the month at Trinity Methodist Church Hall, or contact our Membership Secretary. Visitors are also welcome, at a charge of £2. A leaflet describing the benefits of membership is downloadable from here
We publish a newsletter three times a year and an annual journal, The Hexham Historian, an index to which is available to download free from this site.
Members are also able to access our growing research library of downloadable documents relating to the history of Hexham. New titles are being added all the time but already include Hearth Tax and Jury lists, in addition to the Rossiter Database of inhabitants from the 17th century. A recent addition is Dickson’s Wards & Divisions of Tynedale; The wards, divisions, parishes and townships of Northumberland.
If you have a query relating to the Hexham area, why not post it on our Notes & Queries page? One of our members, or other visitors to the site, may well have the answer. You do not have to be a member of the Society but will need to complete a short registration form.
